Al Gilmore

Newish member of CB staff. I am a 'veteren' of over 20 years singing/writing with various bands. A Rocker at heart (pick any sub-genre of Rock and I'll like it) I have found my tastes broadening as I get older. My aim as regards writing for CB is not to further my own ends, more a case of doing my bit to give our terrific local music scene the coverage it deserves, and perhaps give the benefit of my years of experience.

Kris D Marsden – ‘Some Kind Of’

On his 2014 release ‘Never Ending Loop’ E.P. Belfast’s Kris D. Marsden already demonstrated that he wasn’t a guy who wanted to be pigeonholed. There was plenty of variation to be heard there and it was clear also that he…

Screaming Eagles – Stand Up And Be Counted

I never got to review Screaming Eagles’ debut album, ‘From The Flames’ but, had I done so it would have received a very glowing review. I would have eulogised about the catchiness of the songs, the meatiness of Adrian McAleenan’s ‘DC…

Silver’s Got Strings – ‘Colony’

I reviewed a previous single, ‘If Heaven’s Full’, by Nor’n Ir’n exiles, Silver’s Got Strings (now residing in Brighton) last November. It’s a song I liked a lot and has had a lot of listens since then and is now actually one…

Stormzone – ‘Seven Sins’

We make no apologies here at CB for promoting local bands – of any genre – especially those who don’t sit around waiting for people to do their work for them, who get out there, put faith in their…

Egg In The Sink – ‘The Moon Unit E.P.’

The intriguing name Egg In The Sink is the stage name for singer-songwriter, Gowain McKenna from Belfast. If you didn’t know he was from here, you could be forgiven for pegging him as from N.E. England say, Liverpool or Manchester….

Cavalry – ‘An Understanding’

The depth of talent on this island is such that we literally don’t have any space to promote anything from beyond these shores, unless there is a genuine link with Our Wee Country, such as an upcoming gig or, in…

Gasoline Outlaws – ‘No Rules, No Laws, No Regrets’

The list of local bands who are putting their money where the mouths are and recording a full album is growing at an increasing rate. Not for them the ‘single route’ (often little more than a demo masquerading as…

StormTree – ‘Unchained’

Right off the bat I am declaring an interest. I have known Belfast’s  StormTree for some years, and so some of the songs on this album were not new to me. Also, bass-player, Billy Causby, is an erstwhile bandmate –…
