Newish member of CB staff. I am a 'veteren' of over 20 years singing/writing with various bands. A Rocker at heart (pick any sub-genre of Rock and I'll like it) I have found my tastes broadening as I get older. My aim as regards writing for CB is not to further my own ends, more a case of doing my bit to give our terrific local music scene the coverage it deserves, and perhaps give the benefit of my years of experience.

Kaz Hawkins – ‘Get Ready!’

If you are not familiar or aware of Kaz Hawkins or her former Mama Kaz persona, it begs the question ‘where have you been?’ Kaz has been one of the regular highlights on the local circuit for many years now either…

Molarbear – ‘Fierce Brosnan’

Call it what you will – a band, a project, a who’s-who of local ne’er-do-wells (ok, I made that one up), Molarbear is going to make a name for itself in its own right. That infamy is as likely, if not…

The Logues – ‘Bless The Land’

Folk music has its fair share of detractors. Even now with Mumford & Sons’ success raising the profile of Folk music, it seems that people have gone from poking fun at Folk music, to mistrusting any band who push…

Five Mile Smile – ‘Call To Arms’

Other than the fact that Five Mile Smile are a trio from Belfast who have reformed after over 10 years away from the limelight, I know very little about them. Clearly, they want their music to do the talking…

Seneron – ‘Parasites & Poets’

I always admire bands that put their money where their mouths are. For most bands releasing an album is the goal they hope a record company will help them achieve, and so we get unsigned bands ‘releasing’ a continuous stream of…

King Kartel – ‘Gunslinger’

Based in Manchester but mostly hailing from Newry, King Kartel have been kicking up quite a storm recently both here and on mainland U.K. with their brand of Fratelli’s style Indie Rock. The video for their debut single ‘Stone…

Girl Band – ‘De Bom Bom’

To say the ironically named, Dublin 4-piece, Girl Band won’t be to everyone’s taste is perhaps the understatement to end all understatements. They are a bunch of discordant, anarchic, noise merchants not to put too fine a point on…

Venus Effect – ‘It Would Be You’

Apologies first of all to Steve and the rest of the Venus Effect lads, that their submission for review fell into some sort of digital black hole only to be retrieved now, 3 months after ‘It Would Be You’…

Hit The B Button – Apartments

The fact that Hit The B Button are from Belfast by way of Canada, kind of confirms the simple truth of their message expressed via their debut E.P. ‘Apartments’, and that is that life for those in the world…

Paddy Casey & Kim Hayden – ‘Out of Control’

‘Out of Control’ is a duet between the established and the relatively new. Paddy Casey has a career dating back to the late 1990’s, the highlight being 2003’s ‘Living’ album which is one of the best selling albums of…

Viola Dust – ‘The Big Hop’

Any reviewer will tell you that what they want from a band is a lot of nice, easily digested information to accompany the ‘please review’ email. In short we are often ‘pushed for time’ (see under ‘lazy’) and want…

Team RKT – ‘Cat Island’

I’m gonna say it straight off, this kind of music isn’t really my thing and neither are cats, so North Antrim chiptune duo, TeamRKT, had a hard sell on their hands when ‘Cat Island’ landed in my inbox. But fair play…

His New Atlas – ‘His Young’

His Young (Single) by His New Atlas It’s almost 20 years exactly since Jeff Buckley released his seminal debut album, ‘Grace’. It is one of the great tragedies in the history of music that he was swept away to his…

Slow Riot – ‘Demons’

If we are perhaps finally seeing the dying embers or slowing of the ‘Punk Pop explosion’, then it is clear there are a couple of explosions ready to take its place. We have the Electro Indie Pop of the likes…

Selene – ‘Still Dreaming’

Still Dreaming (Single) by Selene Derry 4 piece, Selene, are a band with an ambitious vision. Symphonic Gothic Metal has its devotees but it is a very tricky sub-genre to pull off. Fellow Derry band, Sandstone, have carved a…
