New material from VerseChorusVerse is a bit like meeting a mate who is great craic but who you haven’t seen for ages. You forget how much fun it is, but then you’re having fun again; it’s great and you don’t want it to end.
Tony Wright has been far from idle over the last couple of years; a book and theatre tour, a well-received web series and artist in residence at the MAC – it’s a long list but it has also been a long wait for a new album with Outro being released in 2018
‘Be Proud’ was recorded whilst in isolation/lockdown in Glasgow and lyrically, it takes it’s cue from the events that have engulfed the planet over the last 12 months while promoting a message of positivity, connection and love for ourselves and for each other.
Built around a looping and hypnotic lead guitar lick overlaid on top of a drum machine track, Wright raps his way through the track and makes fabulous use of some added backing vocals. The edginess of earlier VerseChorusVerse output is evident as is the genre-hopping overall effect of the sound, another trademark of Wright’s work over the years.
This is definitely a track to dance to, and the groove is pretty irresistible – be kind to yourself, be kind to others – stand up, stand tall and be proud!
The good news is that VerseChorusVerse’s album number four is done, dusted and on it’s way. If ‘Be Proud’ is anything to go by, it’s going to be worth the wait and a possible contender for “the best of 2021” lists.
