Watch: Rews – Birdsong

NI native Shauna Tohill goes full-on Anna Calvi for the new release from the infectiously fun indie rock outfit Rews. With strong hints of power-chord thrash bands like the Foo Fighters, ‘Birdsong‘ is the band’s first new material in just over a year and we’re all the better for it.

This band knows how to write a harmony and Tohill’s slashing, driving guitar licks set the scene for this up-beat and uplifting slice of alt rock/pop. We get a big fuzzy guitar intro overlaid with pounding and infectious bass and drums. A fairly heavy guitar break leads into the slower bridge which gives you a chance to get your breath back before the pace picks up again. Tohill’s vocals have a breathlessness and urgency to them that draws you in and the underlying energy of this track keeps you hooked up until the last second.

Rews are spending the winter supporting The Darkness on their current tour and then back into the studio to finish off the band’s second album, due sometime in 2020 – based on this track, it should be well worth the wait.
