Nicky McCallan – Hear On Earth

nicky mccallan hear on earth ep cover

The ‘Hear On Earth’ ep is the first release from Irish singer /songwriter Nicky McCallan (formerly of Belfast based “nearly made it” post grungers God Talking Soul).

Listening to opening track ‘This City’ you can almost see the blood from the guitar strings, a song that sounds like you’ve known it for years.  Whilst McCallan may now reside in England, there’s no mistaking where he’s from. Within two days of uprooting and moving, ‘Land Ahoy’ had been written, and it’s a stunning track, almost sounding like a sea shanty.  With added cello and hand-claps there is a real feel good factor to this song.  The lyrics, in keeping with the rest of the EP are largely self explanatory (the first line is refreshingly honest and open).  An indication of the move being the start of a new chapter and starting afresh, the lyrics are touching and heartfelt.

‘I’m Happy, You’re Happy’, contains some beautiful backing vocals as well as gentle piano and cello touches, but some (to this listener) unnecessary “wave” sounds.  Another stunning track and again some admirably honest lyrics. ‘You Were Right’, features more hand-claps and that “raspy” voice is in full flow.  McCallan has a wonderful tone to his voice, it works to combine perfectly with the lyrical content and passionate delivery to these songs.

‘For Ramona’ is a befitting end to the EP.  It’s what Doves would sound like if they were from the singer’s hometown of Sion Mills in County Tyrone as opposed to Manchester.  A fitting end to a collection of songs for a man proud of his heritage, but musically very much inspired by his new home.
