‘In A Spell‘, the latest EP by Co. Derry’s Sister Ghost is euphonious vocals meets hard-hitting alt rock. All too often melodic vocals are reserved for ballads, pop music, and singer-songwriter types, yet every once in a while you come across an artist that shakes things up. With this release, Sister Ghost can comfortably add their name alongside more prolific contemporaries like The Breeders and Sleater Kinney.
Garage punk in tempo and tenacious delivery, simultaneously Shannon’s voice softens these hardened edges and sharp points without losing any intent. ‘Her Mind’ is the most immersed in the grunge milieu. Hard and fast, whereas ‘Limbo’ is all about crescendos and crashing cymbals, repetitions, and hooks.
‘Wreckless’ is the alt rock gem in this collection. Commanding voice and enthusiastic punk riffs find a way to meet in the middle. Unflinching in execution, the cool confidence of this track leaves me wanting for more.
