Sound of Belfast returns online for 2020

The 7th edition of the Oh Yeah run Sound of Belfast has, like many events, been forced to rethink and reinvent. Kicking off tomorrow evening, the festival programme will take place online featuring pre-recorded performances, workshops and talks.

Events run from Friday 6th November until Thursday 12th November, with a number of live performances including New Pagans and Ryan McMullan premiering on Youtube from 11am. Elsewhere through the following week there’s performances from Jealous of the Birds at Limelight, Duke Special at the Empire Music Hall and Bairie at the Duncairn, to name just a few. Workshop events include PRS songwriter mentoring, Help Musicians NI funding surgeries and talks on Youtube, Spotify and more. Other special events taking place include a tribute event to the late Lyndon Stephens of Quiet Arch and Champion Sound, and a Getting To Know with Therapy?.

The whole festival culminates in the now online NI Music Prize and Legend Award next Thursday night, again featuring a number of performances and the crowning of, among others, the Northern Irish album of the year.

Make sure you’re subscribed to the Oh Yeah Music Centre’s Youtube channel to catch the live events, and check out the Sound of Belfast website for the full programme. Things may be very different this year but there’s still so much to check out.

"Supporting local is the way forward. We want venues that are locally run, supporting local bands, but bringing big bands in too. I’m very optimistic, I think it’s going to be wonderful when it all opens up.”

We spoke to New Pagans’ Lyndsey McDougall about the band’s debut album, politics and motherhood in music, and the pandemic.
