Belfast’s Jason Clarke is starting to see the success his talent deserves. At 27, he is hardly an overnight success, more a case of someone whose tenacity is finally being rewarded. Of course there is rewarded and there is rewarded and there are differing degrees of success. So how does Jason Clarke get to the big leagues?
Well….writing top quality pop tunes seems to be his answer. And make no mistake, ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ is a top quality Pop song and I mean ‘Pop’ in the very best sense. ‘Pop’ as in ‘popular’; songs that a lot of people will like. It’s not a dirty word, not when it’s done with heart and soul as opposed to being created in a test tube and force-fed to us by a media machine.
‘Smoke & Mirrors’ has a distinctly ’80’s feel to it, like a lot of music at the current time; the opening bars remind me of the theme tune to an American t.v. show. That is not to say it sounds dated, far from it. ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ has a thoroughly modern production. Maroon 5 are owning this style of music at the moment, but there’s room for at least one more at the top.
‘Nuff said.
