Jonny Reid – ‘You Lit a Light’

Jonny Reid – ‘You Lit a Light’

Portaferry man, Jonny Reid, is making quite a name for himself, what with prestigious support slots to the likes of Nanci Griffiths as well as appearances on most of the high profile local festivals, including this week’s Belfast Nashville Festival. His latest single, ‘You Lit A Fire’, is now on sale worldwide and has received universally positive reviews, which augers well.

Even on first listen it is not hard to understand why Reid would be many people’s cup of tea, especially those who like their music warm and smooth. Reid’s voice is very easy on the ear and he sings in an effortless style about very down-to-earth subjects. The music itself is pleasant and immediate; Reid gets to the point (chorus) quickly, which may seem the obvious thing to do, but it’s what a lot of listeners want and expect.

Whether Reid is able to make his mark on the already crowded singer-songwriter scene remains to be seen and I would like to hear a bit more edge to his style and delivery to show some versatility in future work, but it is still relatively early days in his career.
