Ka Tet – ‘Baby on The Brink’

Ka Tet – ‘Baby on The Brink’

Galway 3 piece, Ka Tet, have had a very good year indeed. They signed to Ruby Records and subsequently released the ‘Arcadia’ album which they then toured round Ireland to promote. Busy boys indeed. ‘Baby On The Brink’ is the third single to be culled from ‘Arcadia’ released as they head out on a mini U.K. Tour, including three dates in London. Progress indeed for this, still young, band.

I say young, because ‘Baby On The Brink’ does have a maturity about it that belies the lads’ ages, whether it is in the confident strut of the QOTSA-tinged garage/grunge riffing or the ‘knowing’/wordly subject matter of the lyrics. Surely these lads are too young to have such a ‘noir’ view of life? Maybe they just have good imaginations.

Either way, ‘Baby On The Brink’ is a fine tune. Sure, some of the musical elements are far from original, but not as blatant as say, their compatriots, The Strypes. ‘Baby..’ is well played, with a good, tight arrangement and in-your-face production. The vocals are good, with a hint of Gallagher but less nasal/whiny and with a lovely throaty rasp akin to that of Kelly Jones. The band profess to concentrate a lot on their backing vocals and this pays dividend, helping to lift the song out of the run-of-the-mill.

All in all, a very enjoyable listen. Keep an eye out for this band. Hopefully, they’ll get a gig North of the border very soon.
