There’s nothing metaphorical about Lauren Ann’s approach to songwriting. “Why did you take him from me, Lucy? / Were you mad at me?” the 18 year-old drawls over the fuzzy guitars and crashing drums of her fourth single ‘Lucy’. The grunge pop number draws heavily on 90s Seattle sound, something like if the Pixies did ‘Jolene’.
“It’s about being in a relationship and then one of your friends is getting involved. You’re not angry at them but you’re also not happy about it and don’t know what to do,” she explains. “There’s also a bit of envy in there too, because they’re cooler than you and you’re scared that they might take this person that you like.”
Still in the early stages of her career, Lauren Ann recently bagged a deal with Dublin label Faction Records and has shared the production talents of Declan Legge with NI music scene stalwarts Jealous of the Birds and Ciaran Lavery.
Lauren Ann’s raw lyricism and garage ethos ride the wave of Gen Z’s guitar pop revival whilst also feeling nostalgic enough to appeal to those who remember the buzz the first time around. Keep your ears peeled for her debut EP.
