Every month sees more and more great Irish music released to the world. Aaron Cunningham and Will Mac Aoidh select some of our favourite releases of last month, including cover artist Christian Cohle. All found in our rotating playlist.
Christian Cohle – Oh It Must Be Nice
Christian Cohle channels the likes of Future Islands on his newest single, his first in two years. A new sound that moves him further from the harder electronics of some of his earlier work, there’s a real smoothness to both Cohle’s soulful yearn and the music, built around a hypnotic bassline. AC
Rosie Carney – Fragile Fantasy
Rosie Carney is an artist who can do it all, whether that’s delicate folk or spacey, ambient pop. Fragile Fantasy falls into the latter as the first single from Rosie Carney in more than three years. It’s certainly been worth the wait. WMA
Dove Ellis – Love Is
What little I know about Dove Ellis has been gleaned since discovering his debut ‘To the Sandals’ and now his follow up, ‘Pale Song / Love Is’. These very early releases show so much promise, ingenuity and a unique sound. In a very short time, the West of Ireland songwriter has found exciting support slots, and a spot at Other Voices and a real buzz around his live performances. AC
I Dreamed I Dream – Banana Sushi
A title like ‘Banana Sushi’ speaks to me like Ryan Gosling looks at that billboard in Blade Runner 2049. ‘Banana Sushi’ has already received high praise, having been featured on the esteemed Litany of Failures compilation. It’s a song that gets under your skin, tells a compelling story and uses some really intriguing sounds & melodies to do it. WMA
BOLD LOVE – All The Lives
It’s been a great year for BOLD LOVE, with ‘All The Lives’ being single number 4. ‘All The Lives’ is catchy, anthemic but so well put together – that’s part and parcel of working with a producer like Richie Kennedy (Interpol, The Murder Capital). All The Lives is such a bouncy track, one that sticks in your brain long after it’s over. WMA
Lankum – Ghost Town
I’m quite sure we’ve never heard The Specials like this before. Lankum brought us a real Samhain treat with a monstrous retelling of the iconic ska song and its themes of urban decay. At even halfway through, the group’s inventive take would have delivered but it all goes beyond into clattering synth for the outro. AC
Polar Bolero – Soar
We’re big fans of Polar Bolero, whose songwriting talents have been evident since their first releases and live performances. ‘Soar’ captures the rhythm and enthusiasm of the group on stage, an uptempo track that feels like its ends all too soon. Musically hard to pin down with elements of folk and jazz to name but two, we’re excited for their debut EP early next year. AC
