Passion for the Past is the debut EP by up and coming Belfast band Jet Black Tulips, released earlier this year. Bustling with enthusiasm, the young outfit were keen to capture the magic of their live set on the release.
Strangely the opener ‘Living Lies’ is the weakest on the EP. It has that slow ’90s trad rock style of Britpop that Paul Weller and Stereophonics were known for. While lacking in urgency it is saved by the hand calps at the end.
Thankfully ‘Jacket’ delivers on the band’s promise of delivering tracks with great energy. It has a new wave/power pop sound, similar to The Killers with a brilliant synth melody underpinning it.
The follow up ‘Say’ carries on this winning formula. Punky yet melodic, it has a rocking guitar solo.
The band set out to offer up gritty guitars, driving rhythms and hook-led songwriting and this release definitely holds true on that statement.
