Introducing #25 – New Sunset Hotel

“New Sunset Hotel write songs about dreams, heat, sea and space. “It’s indie rock and roll for me”, a mix of real life killers and whiskey. So be it. If you like it, you’re welcome to stay. if you do like it, please stay. There are drinks and songs for everyone.”

▶ Tell us about your stage name?

Around the time we were forming Mark, our guitarist attended a Star Trek convention at a hotel called ‘The Sunset Hotel’ in Baton Rouge. He then put the name forward and we all liked it but we dropped the ‘The’ and added a ‘New’ and so became New Sunset Hotel. He had a great weekend!!

▶ When did you start playing music and how long did it take to find your own sound?

We’ve all been playing music all our lives really but in our current line-up we’ve only been together about two years. I would say that we found our sound just by the meeting of our collective influences. It’s a thing that should keep changing or else it just gets tired, both for the band and the listener.

▶ What releases have you put out thus far, and which would be the one to listen to for the uninitiated?

Our next single ‘Bibles’ would probably be a good place to start. It captures the energy that we are all about. It’s a pretty upbeat song so good listening for the summer too.

▶ Is there a particular live show that stands out amongst all the rest?

The Wilmington Arms last May has to be our favourite gig so far. It was one of the hottest days in the year in London and the venue was sold out. We have played bigger venues and to bigger crowds but that night definitely stands out for us.

▶ Can you talk about a Highlight and a Lowlight of the journey so far?

Highlight – Wilmington Arms gig.

Lowlight – Everything else. Haha.

▶ What does ‘success’ mean to you?

Playing big gigs, Slane Castle, Glastonbury, travelling the world with the band. All pretty ambitious but no point in not aiming high

▶ You are in control of forming a 4 piece ‘super group’ – who is in it and what do they do?

Freddie Mercury – Vocals/piano

Rory Gallagher – Guitar

Flea – bass

John Bonham – drums

▶ If you and 3 bands of your choosing were to do a world tour, who would the other 3 bands be?

Coldplay/Bruce Springsteen/The Killers they would be hard acts to follow.

▶ What will be the 3 strangest things on your rider when you’re able to make any demand?

Fishsticks, Punjana Tea, Kanye West

▶ Finally, in a climate saturated with bands vying for listener attention; why should the good old folks at home listen to you guys?

Because if they do we’ll pay them. Haha
