Derry’s Selene are not a new band to me or to Chordblossom. We have been charting their progress over the past 12 months. I reviewed their previous single ‘Still Dreaming’ (here) back in November which was lifted from their E.P. ‘Paradise Over’ (reviewed by Mel Brehaut here). If you can’t be bothered clicking on those links to read those reviews (shame on you) the synopsis of our thoughts was that Selene are taking on the very selective and difficult genre of Operatic/Symphonic Goth Metal, but doing a very creditable job of doing so.
Recently released single ‘Blood’ is further evidence that the guys and gal are unswerving in their dedication to their style. In her review of ‘Paradise Over’ our Mel says ‘with a band this prolific, if they keep improving like this with every release, who knows how far they could go?’
Well, with ‘Blood’ the band are most definitely showing improvement. This is a cracking tune first and foremost, irrespective of genre preferences. Musically, I think it is their best, certainly their most catchy. Equal parts bombastic and yet also sensitive, it pretty much sums Selene up. They can be as heavy as anyone when it comes to their riffing yet, with Shonagh Lyon’s sweetly operatic vocals atop, they retain that sensitivity that could be lost were a different vocalist to get their larynx around it. Sure, it could be argued a Dickenson, Tate or even our own John ‘Harv’ Harbinson, might make it a tad more accessible to some Metal fans by giving it that harder, let’s say more ‘masculine’, edge. But I have also heard music this good ruined by gruff/growling vocalists that make it even more ‘niche’ (I really do mean ruined). So, instead of concerning ourselves with what Selene are not, let’s celebrate what they are – another great Heavy Rock band from O.W.C. who are talented, hardworking, image-conscious and committed, and who obviously strive for improvement with every release. Bravo!
My judgement of any band is always reserved slightly until I see them in the flesh. I am a rare visitor to Derry, so I am happy to say they have been recently confirmed on the bill for Blazefest V, in the Empire Music Hall, Belfast on March 21st. There is a great line-up again for this charity festival in aid of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Selene will no doubt prove a worthy addition.
