Every month sees more and more great Irish music released to the world. Aaron Cunningham and Will Mac Aoidh select some of our favourite releases of last month, including cover artist CABL. All found in our rotating playlist.
CABL – uh oh
Irish four-piece CABL follow on from last year’s debut EP with a new self-produced single. ‘Uh Oh’ brings in so many elements of the bands sound with the play on dynamics key. Softly sung acoustic sections, weaving emo guitar parts and a big hitting grungey chorus all combine here. AC
NewDad – Roobosh
Galway’s NewDad never fail to deliver and I am always ready to receive. The first single to the upcoming album Altar, NewDad are just cool as Hell – grunge-inspired guitar supports half-spoken, half-sung and half-shouted vocals that’re giving 150%. As great as Roobosh is recorded, I get the feeling that these are songs that really explode live – I might get a chance to find out when NewDad play Mandela Hall in November. WMA
pôt-pot – Sextape
A second release of 2025 for Lisbon-based pôt-pot. The band flew under my radar until ‘WRSW’ and the follow up proves just as vital as they build to debut album proper Warsaw 480km this September. A sound that incorporates the great Irish tradition of psychedelia and kraut rock à la Girls Names or The Altered Hours. Motorik beats and a hypnotic bassline are supplemented here by drones and tight guitar lines. AC
Patricia Lalor – To Must Erupt
I remember listening to This Is How We Connect, While You Stand So Tall way back in 2020 and knowing this was an artist who I needed to keep my eye on. To Must Erupt demonstrates a songwriting ability from Patricia Lalor that never stops evolving, particularly in crafting evocative and creative sounds to accompany beautiful lyricism. WMA
CMAT – Euro-Country
While us Irish have been in-step with CMAT since her cowboy days, 2025 really seems like her year. A Pyramid stage performance and a tour with many sold out UK and Ireland dates are all taking us towards her new album later this month. ‘Euro-Country’ may lack the viral success of previous singles but it should hit hardest back home. An Irish language intro and lyrics that tackle the Celtic Tiger, Ireland’s financial crisis and the role of Bertie Ahern – all through her country-pop lilt. AC
Dollface – Before
Before is such a poignant, creative tune by Dublin’s Aimée Rose. It’s delicate, intricate and intelligently crafted, rising in an arc to a bombastic climax – then finishing with unembellished, raw vocals that tug at the soul something fierce. I’m very excited to hear more from Dollface! WMA
Sarah Crean – 22 Angel
The now Brighton based songwriter releases her first new music of 2025 with ’22 Angel’. It’s a new era for Crean but ’22 Angel’ hits many of the notes that brought her previous releases such success. Melodic and self confessional indie pop with fresh production that brings it to a new level. AC
Poor Creature – Bury Me Not
‘Bury Me Not’ is taken from Poor Creature’s new album All Smiles Tonight, released mid July. With members of Lankum and Landless, Poor Creature exist in similar spaces, often adapting the traditional with a focus on atmosphere and textures. ‘Bury Me Not’ is their take on a 19th-century song about a young sailor who’s dying wish to not be buried at sea is ignored.
