Last month ROE heralded a new era and what’s set to be a big year for her with new single ‘I Dare You’ which seemed to suggest a fresh approach. Now a month on, she’s followed it up with her second release of 2022, ‘A Temporary Thing’.
Stripped down and bare, ‘A Temporary Thing’ is as pure a release as any in the Derry songwriter’s catalogue. Written for her mum after the passing of her granny, it’s about being there for someone, and offering hope amongst grief. Direct in its intimacy, there’s nowhere to hide as ROE’s voice is laid bare over soft piano, recorded as a single full take late in the evening in Donegal’s Attica Audio.
‘A Temporary Thing’ is the most openly vulnerable recording we’ve heard from ROE, with its raw nature allowing her emotional songwriting to rise to the surface. It’s further evidence of her maturing and evolving songwriting as she looks to press on this year.
ROE plays the Black Box, Belfast on 27th May as part of our tenth birthday celebrations alongside Wynona Bleach, Jealous of the Birds, Travi the Native, Tour Alaska, Ferna, Thom Southern & Girl for Sale. Tickets available here.
