The indisputably superb VERA are back with new single, ‘Ketchup‘. It is killingly introspective and is highly contrasting to anything heard in NI at present.
The band carry themselves with a real swagger and the dynamic playing melds a grittiness with RnB grooves that delivers a distinctive alt rock sound similar to that of Wet Leg and Wolf Alice,
The music video of the single begins with Sarah Toner’s eye catching theatrics involving a ketchup bottle alongside VERA’s lyricism of, “I’ve got ketchup stains all down my shirt”, suggesting there may be several meanings behind this one line, creating a real feel of attentiveness for me, as a viewer.
“Making Ketchup was the best craic! We had a smashing team of mystic artistics who helped us envision and create this little piece of video magic. Robyn Maddox helped us write our little visual story, and she did a wondrous job in directing the video. Brendy Seamus was behind the camera, doing what he does so well, so well. We had the excellent Anna Burnett on BTS footage and general vibe craic, as well as Anna having provided the space for us to engage in our silly little antics.
We couldn’t have asked for a better team, or a more satisfying result! We’re so lucky to have good people around us, and we’ve proven that with our tasty little Ketchup-covered video.”

VERA’s alt-rock influence was heightened through Brendan Seamus’ stylistic camera choices, such as and including an oscillating pan from left to right to portray each hidden emotion of the lyrics. Each member of the band’s actions
The cuts to each of the members of VERA fooling around with their instruments, specifically Darragh on drums and the appearance of an accordion, adding successfully to the hint of sarcasm in the lyrics, creating a complexity of realness of the track.
The video portrays the quartet as unapologetically and authentically themselves, their ability to not take themselves too seriously making it profoundly enjoyable to watch.
