Irish hip-hop is having a bit of a moment with the likes of Denise Chaila, Kneecap, Jordan Adetunji and Celaviedmai shaking up a music scene long dominated by folk and indie bands. One of the latest acts to throw his hat in the ring is Tiny Pilot, AKA Adam McCullough.
In charge of writing, performing, mixing, producing and mastering all his own work, NI’s Tiny Pilot is something of a prodigy. His most recent single ‘2 Quid’ is a familiar take on the struggles of upcoming musicians, but with tongue-in-cheek lyrical flair and a deliciously summery beat (think ‘lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to’ meets Flower Boy-era Tyler, The Creator). The DIY aesthetic of the track’s video sees McCullough put his editing skills to the test and explore the clouds from the comfort of his own home.
Whilst he can’t yet afford a Rolex, his self-belief and devotion to the craft take centre stage. It may be early days for Tiny Pilot, but his defiant refrain feels like a promise of more to come: “I got two quid and a Casio / but I still got my songs on the radio”.
