‘Chasing Perpetua’ is the self titled debut release from husband and wife duo Mark a.k.a Sparky and Lyndsey Hill. The pair who openly admit Chasing Perpetua came about when they were having a bit of a rough time as a couple and needed to invest more time in one another and with a common love of music. With self confessed musical ‘jack of all trades’ Sparky on guitar and Lyndsey’s flair for singing and songwriting, Chasing Perpetua was born.
With a sound reminiscent of The Civil Wars, this four track EP offers up a strikingly candid and emotive account of the trials and tribulations that come hand in hand with love and relationships.
“Oh our time will come, free to walk in the sun” the pair passionately sing on opening track ‘The Climb’, which in telling the tale of hope and despair, gives us a glimpse of what to expect and showcases their talent as musicians, with intricate melodies and vocal harmonies shining throughout.
The theme of forlorn love continues on my favourite track, ‘Conquering Heroes’. “Playing games that break hearts is kind of an art, so desperate for answers to riddles of your heart”, the songwriting takes centre stage giving us a captivating account of two lovers so desperately trying to rekindle a faltering flame.
Vocal harmonies paired with a subtle acoustic melody come to the forefront on ‘Be Still’, a track that might tug on your heartstrings, “you say I’ve changed, I’m not the same, what can I say to that?” we’ve all been there with someone at some point right? If there’s one thing these two can do it’s evoke emotion.
To finish up this emotional journey Chasing Perpetua are taking us on, ‘Changing Tides’ closes the EP, a tale of miscommunication and ‘he says, she says’. Again, it’s something we can all relate to (if you say you’ve never been there, I don’t believe you, either that or you’re one of the lucky ones) That’s the beauty of this duo, they’re tackling a touchy subject, it’s a pretty intense listen but they’re real.
‘Chasing Perpetua’ can be summed up simply as ‘passionate’, it’s a promising EP in more than one sense of the word. With their lyricism, beautiful melodies and powerful message alongside, this husband and wife duo have what it takes to melt even the darkest of hearts.
