Savages – ‘She Will’

Savages – ‘She Will’

Female Pop artists may be dominant at the moment but Rock music, as broad a genre as it is, remains overwhelmingly male dominated and all-female acts are viewed with something approaching suspicion. Savages though, whether you like their music or not, are a genuine band with genuine ideas and a real sense of purpose. As with many modern acts, their sound may be fresh to younger ears, but the older listener cannot fail to be reminded of Siouxie & The Banshees. Jenny Beth’s vocals, the aggressive guitars and provocative lyrics (‘kiss like a man’, ‘forcing the slut out‘) are all hallmarks of that great British Punk institution. But Savages are a band in their own right, not clones, and in 2013 they do stand out as being that little bit different. They are a band on a mission of female empowerment and it’d be hard not to sit up and take notice such is their self-confidence and aggression. The song itself is a victory of style over substance. The musicianship is not top-notch, with the rhythm section especially sounding messy at times but that is the essence of Punk and if anything it underlines the empowerment; music made to get a message across in a basic, dare I say it, savage way. Good Stuff.

‘She Will’ is the featured track from the band’s forthcoming album ‘Silence Yourself’ and is available from itunes now.
