Skarlett Riot – ‘Broken Wings’

Skarlett Riot – ‘Broken Wings’

Scunthorpe rockers Skarlett Riot have been busy beavers since forming a mere three years ago: a promising debut EP (‘Villain’), appearances at Bloodstock and Download, a relentless touring schedule and their debut album (2013’s ‘Tear Me Down’)? Impressive! Of course, there has to be quality within the quantity or it’s all for nowt; luckily this is something the band has in spades. The first 2 singles releases from ‘Tear Me Down’ (‘Faded Memory’ and ‘What We’ve Become’) are everything you could ask for from modern rock: catchy, melodic, hook-driven beauties performed by a clearly talented and passionate band. And yes, they are female fronted (sigh), but they are a spikier, meatier version of some of the quite saccharine female-fronted rock bands around at the moment.

Their third single ‘Broken Wings’ has just been released as a lyric video. This time SR have chosen a slower number, a power ballad, if you will. Fear not however: this is no soppy, self-pitying wail! Cute-as-buttons vocalist Skarlett’s voice is beautifully showcased here; it is at once raw and raspy yet emotion-laden and powerful, with great range and control. The lyrics are uplifting and touching which, combined with the slower tempo, results in an inspiring song with yet more hook-laden riffs and an anthemic chorus (yes, even in a ballad).

Skarlett Riot are currently touring with fellow UK rockers Heaven’s Basement, a terrific pairing for anyone who likes their rock with a kick and a modern twist. Hopefully SR will drop this new single into their set; don’t forget to take your lighter, just in case!
