Two Glass Eyes – ‘Mend’

Two Glass Eyes – ‘Mend’

Now into its third year and with one album, copious radio airplay, a slot at Tennants Vital (among other high profile shows) and a tour of Scotland already on the ‘done that’ list, it is clear Two Glass Eyes is a band going places – fast. The North Antrim coast is known for its scenery and the annual motorbike races, but not so well known for producing bands. Two Glass Eyes may soon remedy that situation.

Our apologies to the three lads, but ‘Mend’ was only submitted for review recently even though it was released at the end of January. So let’s make up for lost time. ‘Mend’ is a fine slab of angular, energetic Alt Rock not a million miles away from early Biffy Clyro, but while Michael Donnelly’s vocals always manage to stay on the gruff-but-melodic side, Two Glass Eyes shows no signs of bending to commercialism the way the new, mellower Biffy Clyro has. The end section of the song emphasizes this point with its extended offbeat heavy riffing which was unexpected but very welcome.

If Two Glass Eyes sound like anyone other than the aforementioned Biffy and perhaps My Vitriol, it would actually be fellow local bands, Stillpoint and The Stonemasons. I’d like to think there was more than enough room for all of these fine bands to make their way here, but if there is only room for one of this type of band in Nor’n Ir’n, it is a showdown I’d love to hear/see.
