Apologies first of all to Steve and the rest of the Venus Effect lads, that their submission for review fell into some sort of digital black hole only to be retrieved now, 3 months after ‘It Would Be You’ was released. Anyway, ‘It Would Be You’ is the follow-up release to ‘Into The Fire’ which I reviewed back in February (here).
I was reasonably impressed back then and I am further impressed now with this downbeat-yet-tuneful, acoustic-driven, grunge ballad. It builds nicely on the foundation laid by its predecessor. It sounds more like Foo Fighters in their lighter moments that my previous comparisons with the Brit Rock of Beady Eye, though Hackett’s vocal still have that touch of Liam about them, ‘It Would Be You’ strikes a fine musical balance. It’s neither too grunge-y or too lightweight, and the lyrics are wistful rather than morose.
At just a shade over 6 minutes, it may stretch the patience of those with a short span of attention though not, I hasten to add, me. There is still the odd clunky bit in the music and/or production, not overly noticeable but there nonetheless, so there are still some aspects to work on. But Venus Effect are definitely exhibiting a strong sense of who they are and an ability to put together a collection of strong material. It all bodes well for the future and I will be keeping an eye on them.
