Laura Welsh will release her new single ‘Cold Front’ on July 15th through Polydor/Outsiders. Her first for the label, it’s the follow-up to the acclaimed debut ‘Unravel’ that had blogs raving, mesmerised with its dreamy art-pop brilliance. The new single announces her arrival as a major maverick pop force, the song a reflection of Welsh’s creative ambition and individualistic approach.
After working with indie polymath and Solange Knowles collaborator Dev Hynes on her Luv Luv Luv-released debut, Welsh worked with Robin Hannibal from electro-pop sophisticates Rhye on ‘Cold Front’. The song is spellbinding slick-pop underscored with a bittersweet edge and armed with an indelible, impossibly hooky chorus. Welsh’s own confidence in her songs and sound has put her in good stead and she embraces the challenge of testing herself. “I don’t hold back in saying what I think,” she says, “but that’s because I want this record to be the best it can be.” There are no half measures, no compromise.
Her songs of heartache and euphoria are wrapped in a forcefield of emotion and delivered with that devastating voice. Along with Dev Hynes and Robin Hannibal the Staffordshire-born singer-songwriter has teamed up with Lana Del Ray and Bruno Mars producer Emile Haynie for her forthcoming debut record. Laura Welsh is less one to watch and more one that you won’t be able to take your eyes off.
