Best of Irish – February

Ezra Williams - Photo by Colette Slater Barrass

Every month sees more and more great Irish music released to the world. Aaron Cunningham selects some of his favourite releases of last month, including cover artist Ezra Williams. All handily found in our rotating playlist.

Ezra Williams – Deep Routed

Soft guitar parts and textured harmonies lie at the heart of this confessional and introspective indie-folk offering. Formerly Smoothboi Ezra, Cork based songwriter Ezra Williams channels the likes of Soccer Mommy and Phoebe Bridgers with this emotive single.

Elaine Malone – Nothing is Real

A hugely captivating new track from the typically eclectic Elaine Malone, now signed to Pizza Pizza Records. ‘Nothing is Real’ is an ethereal take on retro-pop that befits its name, with a wash of heavy reverb surrounding the steady march to the song’s conclusion.

Adam Garrett – It Might Be Alright

Another double A side release, this one from songwriter & producer Adam Garrett. ‘It Might Be Alight’ is an incredibly soulful tune with a bass groove and smooth vocals and guitars that compliment every moment of the track.

Lunch Machine – Pipedream Graveyard

Freshly based in Belfast, Lunch Machine launch into their fifth year with the brilliant ‘Pipedream Graveyard’. 90s styled rock with a laid back swagger and a chorus that hits right, expressing malaise at the future and the everyday.

The Florentinas – Weatherman

A band on the rise, ‘Weatherman’ is just the third single in three years from the indie rockers. A track that builds further on last year’s brilliant ‘It’s Not In Vain’, ‘Weatherman’ puts frontman Paddy Boyd’s big vocals to the fore on with a hook-laden chorus amidst slick instrumentation.

David Keenan – Aldente Pasta

Songsmith David Keenan spreads his words across a bed of piano on new single ‘Aldente Pasta’. Despite the odd instrumental flourish, Keenan’s lyrical forays and varied vocals ring clear.

Ugolino – A Fonder Day

Ugolino head out on the town on one half of their new double A side. ‘A Fonder Day’ is musically vibrant and upbeat, laying bright jazz below vocalist Shane Richardson’s smooth hip hop flow.

ESSIRAY – Mr Perfect

Sweet vocals mix with this well produced and glistening pop song from ESSIRAY. Single number four from the newcomer and Dublin based artist with a penchant for indie pop.

Dashoda feat Jackie Beverly – Sultan

Ahead of a debut EP mid-March, Irish producer Dashoda joins forces with co-writer Jackie Beverly on new single ‘Sultan’. Shimmering synths fall in and out under the dual vocal that explores a relationship falling apart.
