Deadlights – Rewind.Restart

Deadlights – Rewind.Restart

‘Rewind.Restart’ by Deadlights is a truly wonderful release. Prior to sitting down to listen to this EP, I had very little knowledge or expectation of this band and was pleasantly surprised by just how versatile they are. Each track carries (what I now consider to be) the signature sound of the band, and yet all have a broad spectrum of influences carefully entwined via whirling guitar riffs, stark dynamic changes and haunting, ‘anthemic’ vocals to create a firmly delivered unique fingerprint in the NI music scene.

Before I had even pressed ‘play’ on this EP, I was expecting a very high standard of production (Mike Mormecha – Mojo Fury / Clown Parlour) and was not disappointed. Flawless production and seamless arrangements carve a very clear path for Deadlights to follow on their musical journey. I found their sound to be quite similar to the likes of the much-lamented Northern Irish punk-trio Under Stars and Gutters, and also to Scot-Rockers Biffy Clyro due to the constant and unpredictable dynamic changes and additional instrumentation making appearances throughout each track. This will be leaving you clinging to the edge of your seat.

I was very impressed with the energy that is conveyed on this studio release, and it only leaves the listener curious as to how powerful these guys would be in a live setting. Although they are quite a heavy band for the average listener, (similar to Enter Shikari / early Lost Prophets at times), tracks such as the instrumental ‘Dust is all that’s left of us’ is one for the masses. Personally, I’m not a fan of instrumental music and feel that vocals and lyrics are the fundamental values of any song, however I did enjoy this track as it did not become mundane as it progressed and was quite suitable for easy-listening.

As a band that will now take pride of place on my iPod; I would certainly recommend you get your hands on this release. It’s hard NOT to love a track like ‘What a Day…’ as it carries all the essential characteristics of a phenomenal rock song. Deadlights are not to be missed, they are on the crest of a wave, and I am incredibly excited to see what they do from here.
