Influences Mixtape: Disorder

Robert Brown by Robert Brown

Disorder Band

Indie rock four piece Disorder are hot property. Their debut EP ‘summerhouse’ recorded in Manor Park Studios, managed to capture their effortlessly cool and catchy sound on record. On the live front the band are known for consistently packing out venues across Belfast and for the first time, the band are heading out on a UK and Ireland tour.

Ahead of their headline show in Belfast on Saturday night, we asked Disorder to take us through some of the songs that inspired and influenced ‘summerhouse’.

The 1975 – The 1975

We were fascinated by Jack Antonoffs production on this album, and having a strong intro to our EP was really important as we wanted it to feel like a body of work rather than a couple of singles.

The Pogues – A Pair of Brown Eyes

We’ve been sitting on If That’s Okay for a long while and we were so interested by the idea of taking the ballad vibe of the song and mixing with something homely hence the instrumentation of that song, Shane’s writing in this song and the instrumental is beautiful, it’s one of our favourite songs as a band. The idea to make the song sound like an Irish pub song came abit later when we got Rory in to play strings on the song, we were jamming “A Pair of Brown Eyes” the night after the first studio session we did and I think it was that that helped spark the idea of really making it a pub/celebration sounding song.

The 1975 – About You

We were really inspired by this song for You + I, I think it’s how Matty sings it, it has a very visceral feeling to this song and we wanted to capture that with You + I and Katie’s vocal lifted this to a different level in the outro.

Oasis – Whatever

The strings in this song have always been iconic to me and Oasis were a huge influence for us growing up, and we wanted the strings on the EP to give the same feeling and Rory was such a gift for this.

Sam Fender – The Borders

A less direct influence, when I was writing summerhouse I was really trying to capture that teenage love that at the time you think the world revolves around it and in time it’ll be a minuscule memory in your life, the tv show Normal People really gave me the idea to write this song, and it’s just about not deeping things in your growing years too much and just getting on with it, because more often than not you end up in a far better position and everything turns out okay.

Inhaler – It Won’t Always Be Like This

Again not overly a direct influence but we love that synth sound and wanted to incorporate it in someway, and it came out on you’re not mine most prominently which was the song we were really trying to drive the opening with.
