Best New Irish – January

Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra - Photo by Callum Browne

Every month sees more and more great Irish music released to the world. Aaron Cunningham and Will Mac Aoidh select some of our favourite releases of last month, including cover artist Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra. All found in our rotating playlist.

Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra – I’ve Been Here Before

It’s been a couple of years since we last had a new PCRO release, but they’re starting out early in 2026. ‘I’ve Been Here Before’ is driven and urgent and bites with angst. The band’s Sarah Deegan splits her time with Mhaol, but we’re hoping this is the year we hear more from PCRO. AC

girlfriend. – Kitchen Sink

girlfriend. played something of a disappearing act since 2023’s To Be Quiet. The excitement that the Irish scene has for their return is a testament to what an exciting act they were – and remain. ‘Kitchen Sink’ is a raw, gritty track, reminiscent of mid-naughties emo, with yelled highs and whispered lows. If that’s your kind of buzz, you can catch girlfriend. in the Ulster Sports Club on the 20th of April. WMA

Curtisy, owin, Emily Beattie – My Friends

It’s true, a new Curtisy release is never far away. Two albums in the past couple of years back up numerous singles, bringing along plenty of collaborators along the way. Yet, as evidenced by ‘My Friends’, the Tallaght rapper doesn’t let his quality dip. His unique delivery keeps things laid back, no matter the tempo. AC

Big Sleep – Old Friend

Big Sleep have been dropping tracks from the upcoming album Holy Show for some time now, a delicious trail of crumbs leading to a big wheel of cheese releasing on the 20th of February. ‘Old Friend’ is beautifully restrained & simple, a lovely goodnight to the busy energy of their other singles. Lots to look forward to on Holy Show, no doubt. WMA

Burglar – Lovey

Written in the immediate aftermath of a breakup and revisited a year later, ‘Lovey’ is the latest single from Burglar. The Dublin based two-piece have impressed live since their emergence, and ‘Lovey’ follows last year’s debut EP Unlucky. Indie-pop, with a hint of anti-folk, there’s a soft humour to this breakup track. AC

Ailbhe Reddy – That Girl

January saw Ailbhe Reddy return with Kiss Big; album number three and her first in three years. ‘That Girl’ is a pure reflection of Reddy’s talents as both her vocals and songwriting radiate emotion. The fast beat of the track leads to a cathartic release. Reddy heads to The Deers Head in May. AC

Cable Boy – Something In My Head

Dublin based Cable Boy are building momentum, announcing their debut album Forever alongside the release of a new single. ‘Something In My Head’ reflects a heavier hitting sound for the five-piece, with the guitar riffs carrying the track’s main hook. They’ll be making their way North this spring. AC
