Best New Irish – March

Lemoncello - Photo by Cait Fahey

Every month sees more and more great Irish music released to the world. Aaron Cunningham and Will Mac Aoidh select some of our favourite releases of last month, including cover artist Lemoncello. All found in our rotating playlist.

Lemoncello – Articulate Animal

‘Articulate Animal’ heralds the latest Lemoncello album, Perfect Place, out on the 8th of May. It’s a bold but considered track, pushing the boat out with lush, layered production and arrangement. It’s got the heart of what Lemoncello are known for – organic and folk-inspired – but it feels brand new, like it’s showing off a gorgeous new coat. Always excellent stuff. WMA

How I Became A Wave – Zero Sum

‘Zero Sum’ sits in the midst of the How I Became A Wave’s eponymous debut album, released last week. The solo project of Pat Carey (The Hard Ground), it’s an album of quiet emotion and music that moves from sparse acoustics to more lush arrangements. There’s a delicateness to ‘Zero Sum’ through Carey’s voice and soft instrumentation. AC

Florence Road – Rabbits Can Swim

‘Rabbits Can Swim’ is the lullaby-like single from Florence Road’s newest EP, Spring Forward. It’s a much more laid-back affair than the singles you might be more familiar with, utilising lyrical skill on a well-crafted musical background. Get a band that can do it all, eh? WMA

For Nina – Labour of my Love

A couple of years on from their debut, For Nina release their first single of 2026. ‘Labour of my Love’ is a quiet/loud indie rock song from the Dublin trio, where the band lean into those charged dynamics and the emotional thread that runs through the track. AC

Innuendo – Sizing Up

A self-described art-pop quartet from Dublin, Innuendo release new single ‘Sizing Up’, their seventh release since their 2023 emergence. There’s a range influences whispering from the opening synth sounds to its guitar based crescendo. There’s more than a little early 2000s indie-rock sound in there too – and that’s no bad thing. AC

Walshy – worth it

The latest release from the often eclectic Walshy washes over like the waves. The chilled out atmosphere wraps around a song written in the wake of a breakup, with catharsis and acceptance at its heart. A emotive but gentle track that looks to herald a new album this summer. AC

The dual voices of Brandon and Ashley Watson have been a fixture of Irish music, going back to their first releases in 2017. ‘Motor Hotel’, an ever-present of the Wexford brothers’ live shows, finds a release on Revisions, an EP of new and reworked tracks. The delicate folk here are adorned with gentle flute and the gorgeous harmonies we’ve come to expect. AC
