Every month sees more and more great Irish music released to the world. Aaron Cunningham selects some of his favourite releases of last month, including cover artist Monjola. All found in our rotating playlist.
Monjola – SPEND SOME TIME
‘SPEND SOME TIME’ is taken from Nigerian born, Dublin raised artist Monjola’s latest EP iTs NoT tHaT DeEP. There’s a range of sounds from the RnB world across the EP’s 8 tracks, while ‘SPEND SOME TIME’ is a love song at heart with its vibrant chorus and smoother verses.
Malaki – Pasta
Dublin rapper Malaki brings out his smooth sounds again on new single ‘Pasta’. Rich, slow tempo hip hop with jazzy instrumentation with understated, almost spoken vocals.
Aonair – Conditional Heart
‘Conditional Heart’ is the first release in two years from Aonair. His love of a retro touch is evident again, as this latest track is a big 80s inspired synth pop track, with a radio-ready chorus that echoes the song’s sentiments of compromise in a relationship.
BIG LOVE – Is It Over Yet
A contemplative new release from Dublin six-piece BIG LOVE. Great production with reverberating indie guitars and glitchy synths combine with a memorable reprise threaded through the track give the track its charm.
Still Blue – Naked
Indie pop darlings Still Blue release their first single of the year with ‘Naked’. A song about communication in a new relationship full of lively guitars and building to an energetic chorus, all the hallmarks of their sound to date.
Noelle Carroll – I Kind Of Like (How You Kind Of Hate Me)
Exploring dating in your twenties and channelling the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Noelle Carroll’s second release of the year is the voicenote led ‘I Kind of Like (How You Kind of Hate Me)’, filled with indie rock moments and tongue in cheek lyrics.
AE Mak – Low Down
The fourth in a rush of 2024 releases from Berlin based AE Mak, from new EP ABC Side Baby. ‘Low Down’ is about hitting rock bottom but the mix of rhythms and AE Mak’s unmistakable art-pop sounds amplify the phoenix-like rise.
find-joy – Foster
A first single from upcoming debut EP there’s a brighter side to life than this, ‘Foster’ showcases a dual vocal driven, indie sound from the indie five-piece.
Susan O’Neill – Sign of the Times
The third single from her upcoming solo album Now in a Minute, ‘Sign of the Times’ has a confident and laid back sound that’s both fresh and vintage, as O’Neill sings about consumerism’s hold on people.
Cairo Station – Menace
‘Menace’ is only the first single from Cairo Station but their name has certainly been getting around since late last year built on their well received live sets. The debut from the young band carries the menace of the track’s title, with strong vocals and a QOTSA rhythm. A promising start.
