Returning with her third release in the last year, Clara Tracey describes ‘Baby Witch‘ as her ‘summer single’. Another instalment of her unique sound, this one certainly has a breezier feel.
On ‘Baby Witch’, Tracey sets out to capture the highs, the desires and the danger of falling in love. That feeling is distilled here into laid back acoustic rhythms while Tracey’s gorgeous vocal floats atop of it all. The psychedelia tinged outro with Tracey’s trademark keys mimic the intoxicating sense of release. It follows on from dreamy Valentine’s Day single ‘Harry Clarke’ and ‘Soap Girls’, her first release as Clara Tracey following her days as Baby Witch.
Tracey herself says of the track; “I wrote this song soon after I moved back to Dublin from Paris. I was living in a shabbier than chic flat above a shop called Bohemia and we thought it was paradise. In the middle of all there was this new love story. Baby Witch is about trying to just let yourself love someone even when it feels like your hands or mind might be tied.”
The Fermanagh native songwriter has spent time in Paris and Dublin but now splits her time between the former and Belfast, recently returning from a residency in the French countryside. Her short time here has been marked by recent performances at Output and Women’s Work, becoming a firm favourite and underlining her talents as an intriguing and must see songwriter taking influence from French chanson and literature, cabaret and Irish stained glass artists.
Clara Tracey’s debut album Black Forest produced by Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) was recorded between lockdowns at Sonic Studios, Stoneybatter. It’s set for release via Pizza Pizza Records in Autumn 2022.
