As the dismal summer of 2023 reaches the moment when the pupal stage begins, later emerging as autumn, it’s nice of Virgins to give us a new song to soundtrack this period of seasonal affective disorder.
According to the band, this is their “…first collaborative writing effort…” which “…finds them embracing pop-centric melodic influences as much as the multitude of fuzz and reverb pedals that adorn their pedalboards…Lyrically the track speaks of unchecked desire being set free.”
And there is much truth to this.
Akin to Nothing covering ‘Carolyn’s Fingers’ by Cocteau Twins, ‘s l o w l y, l o n g’ speeds along with alt-rock intensity with enough shimmering guitar lines to invoke the feeling of floating beneath the surface of the ocean and the vocals are delivered with plenty of melancholic yearning and reverb to send the listener beyond the ocean and into the sun. Guaranteed to invoke memories of a lost summer.
A job well done. Now can we have an album please?
