Introducing #31 – Bee Mick See

Name: Bee Mick See
Started: January 2011
Hometown: Belfast
Genre: Rap
Similar To: Beastie Boys // MCLars // Rubber Bandits
What They Say: “…A one man riot rhythm of tongue and cheek that takes you deep into the mind of an anxious man”
What We Say:  Tackling the beast that is the Irish rapper stereotype with chunky beats, honesty and humour.

◀ Q & A ▶

▶ Tell us about your stage name?

My stage name is derived from the initials of my real name. It’s essentially a rip off of Eminem’s stage name.

▶ When did you start playing music and how long did it take to find your own sound?

I picked up a guitar in 1999. I began rapping in 2001. I started producing shortly after. I found my sound, one I was happy with, about a year ago.

▶ What releases have you put out so far?

Tales of Self Preservation Gone Wrong (LP)

Birds Over Nupes (EP)

▶ Is there a particular live show that stands out amongst all the rest?

YES! Vanilla Ice in Queen’s Students Union a couple years ago. I got to meet him and he played Ice Ice Baby. It was magical.

▶ Can you talk about a Highlight and a Lowlight of the journey so far?

Highlight – Meeting and working with Rocky O’Reilly.

Lowlight – A bouncer punching a wee girl in the face at my Tales of Self Preservation Gone Wrong album launch. Myself, my hype man (Paul Denver) and the crowd tried to intervene and the bouncers proceeded to threaten us and punch members of the crowd. We called the gig off immediately after the incident. The owners of the bar decided to make excuses for the incident and take the side of their door staff.

▶ You are in control of forming a 4 piece ‘super group’ – who is in it and what do they do?

Derek Edward Miller (Sleigh Bells) – guitars, bass, keys, drum machines

Tim Armstrong (Rancid) – vocals, guitars, bass, keys, drum machines

Schoolboy Q -raps

Kate Nash – sings

3 great songwriters. 2 great producers. 1 great rapper.

▶ If you and 3 bands of your choosing were to do a world tour, who would the other 3 bands be?

Taylor Swift – for her Southern hospitality

Foo Fighters – for their craic

Froggy Fresh – for his awkwardness

▶ What will be the 3 strangest things on your rider when you’re able to make any demand?

Fresh Ginger – to go along with the honey and lemon in my hot water.

Unsalted Nuts and Dried Fruit mix – because too much salt can lead to elevated blood pressure in the arteries.

A Ginger Chow Chow Bitch – because dogs are class and that breed is my favourite.

▶ Who has been your biggest inspiration as a musician?

There’s a long list of musicians who I’ve been inspired by. Over the years some have been more influential than others at different points in my life. At the minute I’d have to say Macklemore is up at the top for me. His introspective lyrics are brutally honest, he’s incredibly positive and he has a DIY attitude.

▶ What does ‘success’ mean to you?

Being happy in what I do. It is an ongoing pursuit of mine.
