Introducing: #83 – False Solution

Robert Brown by Robert Brown
November 4, 2016
in Interviews, Introducing
False Solution

Name: False Solution
Formed: 2015
Hometown: Belfast
Genre: Alt Rock
Line-up: Jim Malone – vocals/guitar | Michael Robinson – guitar | Jack Crangle – bass | Eamonn Scott – drums

◀ Q & A ▶

▶ Tell us about your band name

The name came about because we were having trouble naming the band! If three people liked a name then there would inevitably be one who hated it. In the end, one of us said “maybe there’s no solution”, and somehow that sort of summed up where we were in the naming process. Although eventually we decided that ‘No Solution’ would sound a bit too depressing!

▶ When did you start playing music and how would you describe your sound?

We all started playing at some point in our teens, apart from Jim who has been playing since the age of 8! We’ve met/played with each other from a couple of former bands, but we first played together in late 2015 and really hit it off. We have a range of influences from classic rock to funk to metal to punk. We feel this is reflected in our sound which is difficult to pin down but we simply call it ‘alt-rock’.

▶ What releases have you put out so far?

Our debut EP ‘Head in the Sand’ was released in December 2015 and is available for free on our bandcamp page.

▶ Is there a particular live show that stands out amongst all the rest?

We’ve only played a few! But we had a great night down at Alexander’s in Lisburn, the crowd were very enthusiastic and danced for most of the set.

▶ Can you talk about a Highlight and a low point of the journey so far?

The high point was hearing the EP being played through the speakers for the first time. When something you’ve created comes to fruition like that it’s amazing!

Low point was perhaps standing on a windy beach in sub-zero temperatures whilst getting our EP photoshoot done! How none of us got hypothermia…

▶ If you weren’t a musician(s) how would you spend your spare time?

We are all students in various subjects at various stages of our career, so that is what we do outside of music. Making music professionally is the ultimate goal though!

▶ If you were to go on a world tour and you could pick any 3 acts come along, who would they be?

I think we’d say Black Sabbath, The Ramones and Foo Fighters: all legends in their own way!

▶ What would be the 3 strangest things on your rider if you were able to make any demand?

A 2L bottle of Strongbow, craft beer and vegetarian pesto (can you spot the odd one out?)

▶ Is there a particular aim or goal which you hope to achieve through music?

For people to enjoy listening to us and to have fun. Anything else is a bonus.

▶ Who has been your biggest inspiration as musicians?

There are too many to name and we’d all have a different pick. Eamonn would say Thin Lizzy, Jim would say Jim Morrison, Michael would say Rory Gallagher and Jack would pick the Ramones!

▶ Are there any other Northern Irish musicians we should check out?

They’ve unfortunately split up now but Sins of Flynn were a fantastically quirky folk-rock band who we’ve played alongside a few times in other bands. Great lads and very underrated.

▶ What is next for you?

More gigs and more writing, watch this space!
