To try and categorise the music of self proclaimed oddballs Cloakroom Q would be a futile endeavour and their latest Album ‘Tune You Have To Dance To’ highlights that more than ever.
The ten tracks that combined span almost an hour in length, draw influence from a host of genres. From jazz to punk, metal to folk, Cloakroom Q conjure a wide variety of instrumentation and subject matters to create a menagerie of an album containing something for everyone.
For the riff lovers tracks like ‘Nail In Your Head’ and ‘Big Muk (agindawol)’ come packed full of guitar solos and hard hitting bass lines. If that’s not your thing ‘Held at Night’ and ‘Substance’ offer a much more intimate experience with gentle piano and finger picked guitar. Whatever your taste might be there is a good chance it’s in there somewhere.
A personal favourite of mine is ‘Painting My Nails For The Last Time Today’. It is a classic Irish folk track with a few twists and turns and carries a similar lyrical weight to the best from the genre. Featuring an outstanding violin performance, the track builds to a huge crescendo and demonstrates some masterful song writing that will leave you wishing for a Cloakroom Q folk album.
They conclude proceedings with ‘Outro’. It’s easy to close your eyes and imagine the credits rolling with this one. Something that isn’t always the case with outro tracks
‘Tune you have to dance to’ is a musical journey of epic proportions that will leave you feeling emotions that you never knew you could. Where each twist and turn brings something new. It’s a display of raw musical talent unlike anything I have ever heard and an album you absolutely must hear.
