Following on from the success of their single ‘Dilemma’, In June we saw one of Belfast’s newest and most exiting prospects ‘GUSH’ unveil their debut EP ‘Exposure Therapy’. The five track, grunge soaked offering, you simply need to hear, is testament to their ability both as musicians and songwriters alike.
The EP opens up with ‘Decay’. A personal favourite that blends the 90’s grunge soundscape the band leans on throughout this EP, with elements of modern rock and perhaps a hint of pop. It’s very easy to imagine a track like this in the smallest clubs and biggest arenas alike.
‘Dilemma’ introduces an interesting formula of shoe-gaze meets indie-pop to the record and it works perfectly. With reverberant, hook strewn guitar parts, a catchy vocal and a perfectly tasteful bass-line, it’s understandable why the band chose this track as a single prior to the EP.
The EP concludes with ‘Worthless’ and ‘Tightly’, two tracks that could have been pulled off a Nirvana record in some alternate timeline. The tracks serve to show off the potential of Chelsea Andrew’s vocal ability. The raw power and angst she delivers at moments on these tracks is something I hope to see more of on their future releases.
All in all ‘ Exposure Therapy’ is an exceptional debut from the band and the future certainly holds a lot of promise for GUSH.
