D.A.N. – ‘Fairytale’

D.A.N. – ‘Fairytale’

Hot on the heels of reviewing Cavalry – an English-based band featuring a member from Northern Ireland, we now have D.A.N – a one man show, originally from Derry but based in London since a brave move there at age 18. Now, while London may be the logical choice of location to be closer to the movers and shakers, it can mean you are a very small fish in a very large pond whereas, even if NI is far from being the musical hub, at least you can get a more immediate level of fame here. So, it is a very brave thing this young man has done – to have backed his talent in this way.

And while, Electronic music is far from my area of expertise, I think it is clear that D.A.N has a talent worth every ounce of the backing he is giving it. It is clear to me D.A.N views himself as a singer-songwriter, but rather than his accompaniment being the traditional one of the acoustic guitar or plain, pure piano – D.A.N’s musical canvas for his thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics is provided by electronic sounds.

I could easily steal a few names from contemporary electronica and pass them off as my own view as to who D.A.N sounds like (the easiest being Bastille), but the almost Gothic feel of the music and downbeat nature of the rhythm patterns, brings to mind early ’80’s electronic pioneers such as Depeche Mode or Yazoo.

Very, very promising indeed. Keep an eye out for this young man.
