Hailing from Dublin and approaching their second anniversary, 5 piece Alt Rock band, Tiny Vinyls are releasing their second single ‘Black Eyes’, a follow-up to ‘Hide In The Shadows’. They seem to be one of those bands who like to let their music do the talking, so beloved by would-be reviewers looking for info to pad out their pieces (not)! So, that’s you up to speed with knowing as much about them as I do, what else can I tell you?
Ah well now. I could tell you they are excellent, and that would be no word of a lie, for excellent they are. I can tell you they have influences that go back to post-punk (Joy Division, Cure, Siouxie & The Banshees), Grunge (Smashing Pumpkins) as well as post-Grunge of (Placebo, My Vitriol) but, pleasingly they have a sprinkle of originality in how it is all mixed together, with the added ingredient of Nikki’s beautiful voice. The whole thing, including the vocal mix is wonderfully done, really capturing the melancholy, the emptiness of the words, without sounding empty in terms of the music. Not an easy thing to accomplish.
Being from ‘down south’ always brings the thought, with me anyway, of how do they equate to bands up here in the North or who they sound like from here. For me the closest we have here would be R51. In fact, I’d love to hear these two mold-breaking bands in the same room (boxing gloves optional) to hear who’d come out on top. It’d be a close contest and a good one.
