Originally known as Dive, Brooklyn’s Diiv is the beachy pop project of Zachary Cole Smith, also a member of the like-minded Beach Fossils. Taking the project’s name from the Nirvana song, Smith started Dive in 2011 as a vehicle for his own songs and began recording on his own while adding guitarist Andrew Bailey, bassist Devin Ruben Perez, and ex-Smith Westerns drummer Colby Hewitt as his live band. Beach Fossils’ label, Captured Tracks, signed Dive and released the singles Sometime, Human, and Geist. In May 2012, the band changed the spelling of its name to Diiv after learning about the Belgian industrial group Dive. After releasing another single, How Long Have You Known?, Diiv issued their debut album, Oshin, in June.
