Newish member of CB staff. I am a 'veteren' of over 20 years singing/writing with various bands. A Rocker at heart (pick any sub-genre of Rock and I'll like it) I have found my tastes broadening as I get older. My aim as regards writing for CB is not to further my own ends, more a case of doing my bit to give our terrific local music scene the coverage it deserves, and perhaps give the benefit of my years of experience.

The Answer

The Answer – ‘Solas’

It’s a long time since 2006 and The Answer‘s acclaimed debut album, ‘Rise’. The Co Down hard rockers received plenty of plaudits back then, especially from the specialized Rock press, and were tipped for great things. Has that promise been…

Singles Club – October 2016

This month’s Singles Club is brought to you in conjunction with the word ‘smorgasbord’. A Scandinavian word literally meaning a buffet meal featuring many types of open sandwiches and horse’s douffers , smorgasbord now refers to anything which has a variety…

Emmet McGonagle

Emmet McGonagle – ‘Marigold’ E.P.

I know I have mentioned this more than once, but I think it’s important for the artists I review, to be reminded that I have sung in bands for much longer than I have been writing about them. And the…

Safire – Under My Skin

Safire is a band I have seen a couple of times in a live situation now, and while it was clear that the band was still finding its way, I was left in no doubt that it was a band that…

Ports – The Devil Is A Songbird

One of the prickliest subjects with musicians is that fine line between ‘being influenced by’ and being ‘derivative of’ a famous band. Any band that is deemed to be chasing a trend is put down as the musical equivalent of an…

Singles Club – September 2016

Straight in, no messing this month. Playing catch up with my overloaded inbox. ►Keith Harkin – ‘Risk The Fall’ ‘Prolific’ is the word to describe Derry-born singer-songwriter, Keith Harkin. Between his solo material, his work with the ‘Celtic Thunder’ project…

Singles Club – August 2016

Not much preamble this month, except to say that this month highlights once again the breadth and depth of talent in Northern Ireland, with a decent spread in the age of the acts as well. It’s as it should be….

The Singles Club – July 2016

Is it only me or has this year just flown by? So fast, in fact, I left out June (don’t ask) – apologies to those I have kept waiting. We’re over halfway through 2016 and so far the year…

Watch: Blackwater Conspiracy – ‘The Monday Club’

When the news came through that N.I. sleaze rockers, Million $ Reload, were calling it a day, I was more than a little downcast. In my humble opinion M$R were one of the best bands to come out of these islands…

Runaway [Go] – Alive

Ok. We’re a tad late reviewing this album, so apologies to all concerned. But better late than never as the saying goes, and the one thing that the delay in reviewing this fine album allows for, is the reviewer being…

Magnum – Limelight, Belfast – 27th May, 2016

Magnum, with support from Vega Friday 27th May 2016 – Limelight 1, Belfast This was a show I was really looking forward to. Like many of those gathered tonight, I was a fan of Magnum in their 1980’s heyday – especially…

The Singles Club – May 2016

Welcome to the latest of this relatively new format of my review of the best of local singles. The hope when reformatting this column was to give exposure to more singles from local artists and perhaps opening a few more…

Irontown Diehards – Irontown Diehards

Let me explain something to you. The Irontown Diehards’ self-titled debut album is not just the best album by a ‘new’, local, rock band this year. If it was, you could say I am giving them extra marks for being…

Lady J – Lady J

Derry’s Lady J is another of a increasingly long list of bands that I hadn’t heard of until they rocked up at the Diamond Rock Club, and immediately made me a fan thanks to their live performance. I like…
