Every month we take a look back at the best new releases from Northern Ireland in our featured playlist. A showcase for the sheer amount of talent coming out of the North, and a playlist worthy of repeat listening. This month’s cover artist is ROE. Words by Aaron Cunningham & Ben Magee.
Featured tracks
ROE – Cruel
“Working with Rocky O’Reilly on this song was really exciting and it’s the start of something completely different for me sonically. ‘Cruel’ is about all the mixed up emotions of leaving a relationship that isn’t working anymore. It’s a dismal realisation of how manipulative people can be.“
Fake Friends – Romantic Thing
The third of three varied singles from the young band from the North West, ‘Romantic Thing’ is a real charmer of an indie tune, It really is all right there on this one. AC
HY:LY – Secrets
Underground in every sense of the word, this track feels, sounds and smells like the bowels on an industrial nightclub. Raw, moody and sweltering, HY:LY’s blend of House, Drum & Bass and alternative electronica creates a raver that is absolutely essential listening for this month. BM
The Funeral Rose – Torn Apart
A new find and a firs single, Joy Division influenced goth from Belfast two-piece The Funeral Rose. ‘Torn Apart’ is all deepened vocals, moody guitars and funeral-ready synths. AC
A.N.J.A. – Monoxide
The psychedelia of the persistent guitar riff and steady drum beat is only enhanced by A.N.J.A.’s siren vocals. Absolutely awash with colour. AC
Warriors of the Dystotheque ft Lydia Kaye – Lost in Your Silence
The latest from the WOTD tribe is a jazzy number that enlists Lydia Kaye on vocals. Kaye’s voice and the magic behind it create this airy, and seductive track from their new EP. AC
