We love to focus our attention on musicians and bands from Northern Ireland, we receive submissions from all over the world. Our No Fixed Abode feature shines a light on artists and bands from further afield that we think you should hear.
John Hugo – Friends
Kicking things off with some Swedish pop rock. There is a fuzziness to track which is produced by the artist’s brother. The track centres the uncertainty and confusion that develops when a relationship ends and you lie to yourself and to the other person that ” we can still be friends”. It is possibly a little poppier than we tend to feature but the catchy nature of the chorus and breakdown just after the 2 minute 30 mark stuck in our heads.
Darkstates – Embers
A beautiful electronic track that stopped us in our tracks. Masterfully crafted by Darkstates, the track takes us on a sonic journey through rich and ever shifting landscapes. The track feels quite melancholic in places with glints of hope embedded throughout. The vocals are a real highlight and if you don’t get a call back to the first time you heard Bon Iver, I’d be very surprised.
senses – No Fun
Los Angeles rock band senses latest effort hits that happy medium between pop and rock with a breezy anthem about finding someone who tames the crazy side of you. Opening with almost a glitchy video game inspired sound, the tempo sounds ratchets up and the drumming becomes particularly hard hitting. The song evokes memories of Misery Business era Paramore or Australian outfit Tonight Alive.
Julia Logan – Mirrors
Julia Logan is spell binding on her latest single, ‘Mirrors’. A spell binding alt folk song that plays to Julia’s strength of finding beauty in small moments of human longing. From the simple but charming piano to Long’s outstanding vocals, fans of First Aid Kit, Laura Marling and the Staves will find plenty to love here.
Austin Carr – Want Me Back
Hailing from LA, Austin Carr’s new single is a sneak peek of his forthcoming EP, due in summer. A slow burning indie pop ode of regret where the emotion is captured perfectly on the vocal delivery. The electric guitar and drumming lend a sense of cool and perhaps swagger to the sound. A strong and confident sound despite the sadness of the lyrical content.
prom – Come Undone
Emo hardcore punks manage to capture our attention despite the short track length. At under a minute and a half, they waste no time in getting their point across. Between the frenetic drumming & the edgy riffs, there is a real purpose and energy here that most bands fail to capture even with double the time. A pulsating shot in the arm for those short on time.
