Kylie Rothfield – Never Loved Somebody
A stirring and soulful release from Rothfield who continues to go from strength to strength. The track explores the loss of love for someone who doesn’t deserve it but that cynicism never overwhelms the warmth emanating from Kylie. In fact, the real joy of the song comes from the great vocal range which captivates and charms us in equal measure.
Slung – Neurotic
The debut release from alt-grunge outfit Slung marks them out as ones to watch. ‘Neurotic’ really comes into its element in the back half of the track when the building momentum reaches a blistering climax. Vocalist Katie Oldham gives us a glimpse into all the little ways we seek to control the world around us so we don’t spiral into nihilism.
drifting – Patrick
The striking retro feel helps drifting apart in the crowded indie rock field. Taken from their album ’73 Dame Street’, it seeks to showcase a late night in Dublins queer-rock scene. The hazy guitar led effort that follows is effortlessly cool and will especially appeal to lo-fi aficionados which the distinct DIY style on offer. All reinforced by that VHS inspired video.
Skinner – Geek Love
The most interesting release to date from Dublin based producer Aaron Corcoran. Crammed with raw energy, it finds Corcoran blending disco and funk influences to great effect. Despite the fact it’s very danceable, dig deep enough into ‘Geek Love’ and there is a harder edge on the subject matter of the lyrics. Quite simply he doesn’t care if it makes us feel uncomfortable.
