Despite being released over three years ago, Sullivan & Gold‘s debut album, continues to be regularly played at Chordblossom HQ. After a period of radio silence, S&G are back with a brand new single, ‘Guatemala‘, a taster for the forthcoming second album. In the three year period since For Foes, Sullivan & Gold have moved from being a two piece, to being the solo project of Ben Robinson. Sometimes the loss of an original member can be detrimental to the quality of new music, thankfully that isn’t the case here.
‘Guatemala’ is the typical of the bittersweet folk tinged pop that we have come to expect from Sullivan & Gold. It balances a tale of a faltering relationship with a political message influenced by Ben’s time living in Guatemala and Uganda. Here Ben’s alluring vocals are paired with luscious strings, that allows the song to rise and fall across it’s three minute duration. Based on this taster, we are confident that Sullivan & Gold won’t suffer from second album syndrome.
