‘Cleave’ is the debut track by Belfast’s newest prog rock trio Matua Trap.
Matua Trap features Steven Butler, Clark Philips and James Bruce, members of Kasper Rosa and Affleck. This new group comes on the back of Kasper Rosa’s return to the Belfast scene with a couple of shows earlier in the summer.
‘Cleave’ sees the trio combine to create a progressive sound with nods to math and post rock. The sound is more akin to the Kasper Rosa style than Affleck, closer to Porcupine Tree and Mastodon. The guitar moves from discordant to melodic while the piano on the track adds extra depth that is missing from more guitar based rock. If ‘Cleave’ is anything to go by we look forward to more polished progressive rock from Matua Trap in the future.
The track is available through Bandcamp below.
The band will be playing their first show for Hidden Machine at Voodoo on 17th September. Support on the night comes from LA math rock duo 100 Onces and the punk & grunge of Belfast’s own The Stonemasons.
