Wednesday 1st October sees The Emerald Armada, Hurdles and Freaks take to the stage for Red Rock 2014 at Limelight 2 in aid of Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke.
Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke is the local charity for the care and prevention of chest, heart and stroke illnesses. Their vision for Northern Ireland is one where everyone can live life to the full, free from chest, heart and stroke illnesses. Their work is focused in four areas: Care Services (cardiac services, respiratory services, stroke services and Self Management Programmes to help clients cope with a long term condition), Prevention and Health Promotion, Research and Policies. All funds are raised within Northern Ireland and are spent within Northern Ireland.
Headliners The Emerald Armada was formed by lead singer Neil Allen with his friend of over 20 years and bassist Gary Lynas. The two became four with the additions of Benjamin Hamilton (Rhythm Guitar) and Dermot Moynagh bringing unique and contemporary bodhrán playing to the forefront. With a wealth of highly energetic home grown songs just waiting to take form, The Emerald Armada was born and soon made its way to a five piece. The last addition came in the form of Lead Guitarist Tony McHugh. Since 2010 the Armada has foot stomped, knees up’d and even the odd crowded surfed around the UK & Ireland. 2013 saw The Emerald Armada support acts such as Newton Faulkner, Frightened Rabbit, Villagers, Admiral Fallow, Hayseed Dixie and other top class acts. Songs such as “Everyone” featured on Channel 4s hit TV Series “London Irish” and numerous festival slots have helped the Armada share their unique brand of alt/irish folk music with the world.
Belfast indie pop 4 piece, Hurdles, have been playing live together since October 2012. Having released 3 singles, ‘Pictures’, ‘Paper Soldiers’ and ‘Kaleidoscope’, all of which have received airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Ulster.
Freak’s are a 4 piece alternative indie band from Strabane. In recent times things have gone from strength to strength for Freak’s having their first single ‘Number One’ played weekly on BBC Ulster’s Across the Line and also featured in their ‘Best NI tracks of 2014’ show to making their festival main stage debut. Their second release ‘A Minute More’ has had equal appraisal, seeing them feature as the live house band for ATL and also getting air-time on BBC Introducing with Jen & Ally on Radio One.
