Derry trio Seneron has been together since 2011. The three lads have always shown that they know how to put together slabs of riff-invested power rock, very much in the mold of the first two Foo Fighters albums. I would continue the Foo’s comparison in that, like Dave Grohl, vocalist John Shields is not the best Rock vocalist you will ever hear. Shields has Grohl’s manly growl that is limited in range but not power and compliments the music to such an extent the listener does not spend the whole time preoccupied with thoughts about how another type of vocalist, say a Cornell, would sing the same song in a different/better manner. If you listen to their back catalogue and compare it to this new release, ‘Don’t Cave In’, you will also hear a steady improvement in vocal tone, adding a more melodic dimension. This can only help gain the band more fans.
Everything else is in place. Musically, ‘Don’t Cave In’ exhibits a very tight and brutal sound, that just bludgeons the listener from the first seconds with no let up throughout. The production is excellent, which is not a surprise given that it was recorded at the excellent Manor Park Studios. The production really allows all the instruments a chance to shine in equal measure and, as I said, with Shields’ voice fitted nicely into the mix with the right blend of aggression and melody.
This is a song that should make the people that matter sit up and really take notice. It shows maturity, bar the odd clumsy lyric (I would avoid rhyming anything with ‘insane’ if at all possible) and a real improvement on the band’s already high standard. It is the first song from the band’s debut album, due out later this month. If this is indicative of the overall quality on that album, it should be well worth checking out. A video is also due for ‘Don’t Cave In’ which will again help get the band more attention.
Seneron will be embarking on a European tour over the summer to capitalise on the airplay and media buzz the band has already garnered in several countries on the continent.
