As most of our regular readers will know we love getting out to all the fantastic gigs and festivals taking place across our wee country. Not surprisingly as Head of Live Reviews I spend a lot of my spare time in venues of all shapes and sizes but even I have trouble picking and prioritising which gigs to attend when there are so many to choose from. So to save you all the hassle I’m going to single out two or three gigs each week that you shouldn’t miss.
Getting To Know – Oh Yeah Centre – Thursday 7th February 2013
The first of our events this week is also a new feature. ‘Getting To Know’ is the latest project of the always entreprising team at the Oh Yeah Centre. This new monthly event will give fans to witness the hottest new musicians play a few songs and be interviewed. Not just for music fans, the event encourages other members of the music community to come down and network. Go Wolf, Hannah McPhillimy, Howl and Basic Translation will be the main participants but there will also be a very special interview and performance from Katharine Philippa.
Even better for all you cheap skates the event is completely free!
Desparecidos – Limelight 2 – Friday 8th February 2013
It shouldn’t really come as a surprise for most indie music fans that this gig has made it onto my list. The major reason for this is down to it being fronted by Conor Oberst. The front man of Bright Eyes draws a good crowd at the best of times and while this latest endeavour is a lot heavier than his other material, it will be a special evening.

Jake Bugg – Mandela Hall – Saturday 9th February 2013
One of the rising stars of 2012, Jake Bugg’s album stormed to the top of the charts and received plenty of critical acclaim. Tickets to his show last September in the Black Box were like gold dust and a quick check of Ticketmaster seems to suggest this one is the same. Mr Bugg has been compared to Bob Dylan so if you happen to come across a rare ticket, get down there, it is fairly unlikely he will play such an intimate venue in the future.
