Our fortnightly gig guide picks out a handful of must see gigs taking place across Northern Ireland.
A bustling month for the NI music scene would be an understatement, as the annual Sound of Belfast finally arrives, a month of non-stop live music.
Lifts and Makeshift Art Bar – Ulster Sports Club, Belfast – 2nd November 2023
Dublin based alternative rockers ‘Lifts’ are set to play in the heart of Belfast, an exhilarating return. The unique use of electronically augmented strings accompanied with a folk like soft Elliott Smith-esque vocal performance makes for a unmissable live act. Supporting is local post-punk trio Makeshift art bar, upon the release of debut single Inertia, a highly promising launch that exerts a provocative energy.
Volume Control: Clash of the New Breeds – Oh Yeah Centre, Belfast – 10th November 2023
Don’t miss out on the highly anticipated Oh Yeah’s youth project Volume Control’s annual battle of the bands, honouring the unsigned, freshest acts throughout Northern Ireland. This eclectic lineup varies from smooth shoegaze to striking heavy rock, who will win?
Stripped down: Winnie Ama, Ceělia Tiab and Ben Flavelle-Cobain – Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast – 11th November 2023
The crescent makes its return of Stripped down, a series of heartening acoustic gigs brought together by progressing talents. Headlining this session, we have Winnie Ama, a name I seem to hear constantly, and for good reason. Her empowering electronic R&B beats meld with pop hooks meticulously, a stripped down spin on this sparking intrigue. Not to mention the enticing collaboration within Celia Tiab and Ben Flavelle-Cobain, two emerging solo artists brought together with soulful serenity.
NI Music Prize – Ulster Hall, Belfast – 15th November 2023
The event that the local music scene awaits longingly for makes its fortunate return. With finalists that have paved a new way through the scene in the past year, the competition is tough. Performing, we have a lineup crammed with undeniable talent including Chalk, a live act that radiates intensity with lyrics of powerful indignation as well as the radiating indie rock sensations The Florentinas.
